 A couple of months ago, I attended an event hosted by Beautylish.  At this event, I got to meet Indie Lee, who was also there a guest.  She comes across as one of those people that just loves life. Her friendly, warm personality makes people instantly gravitate toward her. I soon learned that Beautylish would be selling her skincare line as one of their online boutiques. Since I frequently shop the site, I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to try some of the products from her line. If you've read my post about my skincare routine a couple of months back, you'll know that I am obsessive when it comes to taking care of my skin.

One of my biggest skincare concerns is the delicate skin under my eyes.  For this reason, I have tried countless eye creams, and I am religious about always hydrating this area.  I had just run out of the Tarte eye cream I was using, and decided to replace it with the Calendula Eye Balm from Indie Lee. I also purchased Indie Lee Moisturizing Oil in Lavender Chamomile, and received the CoQ-10 Toner as a gift as well as a sample of the Squalane Facial Oil from Beautylish.   I noticed a difference in my skin almost immediately after I began using Indie Lee skincare. The day I received my order I could not wait to try my new products out. I began testing everything out that evening. When I woke up the next morning and looked in the mirror, my skin looked smoother and more hydrated than normal. Of course I wanted to run to my computer and write a blog post right away. However, I decided to hold off, and try the products continuously for a bit longer so that my review would be more helpful to those considering purchasing any items from the line. 

Here is a look at the products I've been using from Indie Lee: 

Indie Lee CoQ-10 Toner:

Unfortunately I was not able to attend the DIY beauty event hosted by Beautylish and Indie Lee, last month, but Beautylish was kind enough to send me this gem that guests received in their gift bags anyway. I've been using it for about a month now morning and evening after cleansing my skin. I simply pump some out onto a cotton round and sweep it over my face and neck. This toner is alcohol-free and contains the antioxidant CoQ10.  It also contains hydrating ingredients like aloe vera and Hyaluronic acid.  

Toners tend to get a bad rap because of the overly drying astringents once found on the market. This one is actually hydrating and the perfect way to refresh the skin.  I find it quite soothing, and it is honestly one of the best toners I've ever used. This is ideal for normal to dry skin types, which is exactly what I need as we head into the winter months. Once I run out of this I will definitely be buying another bottle.

Indie Lee Moisturizing Oil in Lavender Chamomile: 

I knew I wanted to try a facial oil from this brand when I was placing my order and decided to purchase the Lavender Chamomile one based on the reviews I'd read online.  The scent of this is just amazing.  What surprised me most about this product when I received it is how much you get in the bottle. 

When I compare it to previous oils I've used such as Josie Maran's Argan oil, the size is truly impressive. I'm really glad you get so much, because I use this not only on my face, but also in my hair and as a body moisturizer. I tend to use this product only at night, because of the calming effect lavender has.  

Again, the bottle has a pump-style dispenser and one pump is enough to do my full face and neck.This absorbs easily into the skin, and when applied in the evening, I wake up with glowing, smooth and hydrated skin. I do tend to suffer from breakouts on occasion, but this oil does not irritate my skin at all. It's formulated with jojoba, which works for all skin types.

Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil:

Beautylish sent me a little sample bottle of this product in an adorable little bag that says "try me!"  This facial oil is olive-derived and intended to promote elasticity and increase cell regeneration.  Some have even noticed a reduction in age spots after long term use. I used this product mostly in the morning, applying a few drops to my face and neck after cleansing and toning my skin.  I absolutely love this before makeup. It's extremely hydrating, and absorbs quickly.  It works especially well when applied before mineral foundation.

The small sample size I got came with a medicine dropper style applicator, but I believe the full size has a pump like the other products in her line do. I personally did not notice a reduction in the small spots I have around my eyes after using this, but I only tried this small sample. However I purchased the full size today, so I'll be sure to report back after I've used the product for a bit longer. What I have noticed, is how light and fresh my skin felt after I applied this oil. It is not as thick as argan oil, and seems to absorb more easily into the skin. If you haven't enjoyed other face oils in the past, this might be a good one to try because of how weightless it feels on the skin.  This oil is non-comedogenic, which makes it ideal for those with acne prone skin. 

Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm:

I just looked on Beautylish, and this product is actually sold out now!  I'm not surprised at all because it is AMAZING. This is the one product I recommend to everyone. The smooth balmy texture just melts into the skin creating the perfect layer of moisture around my eyes. It leaves the skin with a dewy appearance wherever applied. In the colder months I am sometimes prone to dry patches on my skin.  I apply a tiny bit of this balm to the dry patch at night and the next morning it it significantly better. I am completely in love with this product, and will repurchase once I run out. Though I suspect this little jar will last me for a long time, because you really only need the tiniest amount for your under eye area. I use this both morning and evening, and have already noticed that my dark circles seem much less noticeable. One of my biggest complaints about other eye creams is that when I apply it in the morning, by mid day, my under eye area looks dry again, making my fine lines more noticeable. This balm not only hydrates the area, but the hydration is actually long lasting, making my lines far less noticeable.

Last month, I shared with you my favorite lipsticks of the season.  This month, I thought I'd share my favorite blushes. When the weather outside gets colder, I swap out my bronzer for blush. Nothing gives that natural flush to the cheeks like the perfect blush. The right blush will look like you just stepped in from the cold, and help brighten the face. 

From creams to powders, I've got you covered. While I favor peachy blushes in the summer, and pinks in the spring, fall/winter blushes lean rose, orange and nude for my picks.  I've included shades for a variety of skin tones, skin types, budgets and from various brands so you'll be sure to find one that works for you.

Milani Baked Powder Blush in Red Vino: This is the newest blush in my collection. On a trip to my local pharmacy, I checked out the makeup (as I usually do).  Although the last thing I needed was more makeup, this blush was calling my name! This smooth, pigmented powder leaves the most beautiful glow on the skin. It's a red wine color with gold veining running throughout.  When your blush swirls the colors together, you are left with beautifully flushed and highlighted cheeks in one swoop. No matter what your skin tone is, be sure to use a light hand, because this is super pigmented. This is a great choice for deeper skin tones, but those with fair skin, like me can still wear it well if you are careful to use the right tools, and always be sure to tap off the excess. 


Milani Romantic Rose Powder Blush: This limited edition blush is a dusty mauve shade. The pigmentation is fantastic, and the powder is silky smooth. This blush really leaves the skin with a youthful glow, despite the fact that it's a matte formula. If you are looking for a cruelty-free drugstore blush, that is just a little more special, this is a great one to try. The petal pattern of the product is just so pretty and feminine, you won't want to use it at first for fear of ruining it, but trust me it's worth it!

NYX Mauve Blush: Like the Milani blushes above, this is a budget friendly pick. This is a soft dusty pink powder blush that gives a sheer wash of color to the cheeks. The finish is completely matte, which is often difficult to find in a budget friendly blush. This shade is particularly beautiful on fair skin tones, but the color can be built up in intensity to flatter medium skin tones as well. I've found this blush to be long lasting, and a nice compliment to the burgundy lip trend of the season. 

NYX Cinnamon Blush: This bright matte orange looks amazing on those with a deeper complexion.  This shade is very pigmented, and blends well onto the cheekbones. I use this color frequently both personally and professionally. If you have fair skin, you will want to use a very light hand with this one. On occasion, I have even used it as an eyeshadow to compliment my blue eyes. 

NYX Cream Blush in Orange: If you are interested in NYX Cinnamon, but have a drier skin type, you may want to try this one instead. This color is a bit softer than Cinnamon and while it doesn't have any added shimmer, it does leave a dewy finish on the skin since it is a cream product. It blends beautifully into the skin, and you can easily get a good 10 hours of wear time before any noticeable fading.

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Blush in Nude Glow: This is my pick of the season for those with super sensitive skin or allergies to talc or parabens. This is one of the few blushes I own where I have actually hit pan. I am finding this shade increasingly difficult to find in stores, and I really hope the brand doesn't or hasn't discontinued it. This is a very light mauve shade that looks beautiful on those with super fair skin. It has a marbleized design that blend together to create the perfect flush. Whenever my skin is breaking out, this is the blush I use, because I know it won't further irritate my skin. 

Everyday Minerals Girl Friday Blush: Matte skin is very much in for Fall/Winter 2013. Therefore, in many of my looks, I am reaching for a matte blush. Sure there are still days where I want to add a bit of a sheen, but on those where I want a truly matte look, this is one I reach for. Though it is matte, it still leaves a healthy glow on the cheeks. This is largely due to it's reddened-pink shade which leaves that lit-from-within look that I love so much. This is a great choice for every skin tone, and another good choice for those with sensitive skin.

Tarte Exposed Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush: This blush became a favorite of mine toward the end of last year, and I continue to use and love it. This is one of the pricier blushes on this list, but it's worth every penny. This matte nude shade just looks so natural on my skin and is perfect for no-makeup makeup looks. Plus it's paraben free and made with amazonian clay, which helps balance out the oil and moisture levels in the skin making it work well for all skin types. Tarte's blushes in general are super pigmented, so I usually apply them with a fan brush for a lighter application. I own many of the Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes, but this one is hands down my favorite from the line. A must have for those with a fair to light skin tone.  Try it with the Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in Exposed for a monochromatic makeup look.

IT Cosmetics Vitality Flush Color Stain Stick in Je Ne Sais Quoi (sample):  Speaking of monochromatic looks, this chubby stick from IT Cosmetics blends beautifully onto the lips and cheeks making it the perfect multitasker for those with a busy schedule. The kind folks over at IT Cosmetics sent me this a while back as part of a kit.  However you can try this sheer pink flush as part of a duo available here: http://www.qvc.com/It-Cosmetics-Vitality-Flush-Reviver-Color-Stain-Stick-Duo.product.A234861.html 

Prior to trying this I was a huge fan of the Je Ne Sais Quoi lip color, so I was super excited to see this shade available in a format that works on the cheeks as well. This creamy formula is very hydrating, making it ideal for those with a drier skin type, or those who suffer from seasonal dryness or flakiness of the skin. It can be applied straight from the tube, applied with fingers, or a small stippling brush. 

e.l.f. Blush in Blushing Rose: Last, but certainly not least is the blush that I've worn most this season. It's the perfect rose shade with subtle shimmer running through it. At only $3, this blush is super affordable and you really can't beat the quality for the price. I love this color so much, and the pigmentation is impressive. As I've mentioned, it does have a lovely shimmer to it, but it's not heavy glitter by any means. This is inexpensive, and works great, period. What more can we ask from a blush? For this reason it's quickly becoming a favorite among my collection! This is a total steal, and although the packaging is simple, it is still quite sturdy, so you don't have to worry about it breaking in your makeup bag. Just buy it.

Top 5 Fall Lipsticks

The weather is starting to get cooler, and the leaves are changing color here in Connecticut. Fall is such a pretty season, and one of my favorite things about it has to be the makeup. Last month, I shared my favorite Fall eyeshadows in a collab with my friends Catherine and Christine. This month, I decided to stick with the top 5 theme, and share my picks for Fall lipsticks. 

I've included both old and new favorites as well as a variety of price points.  If there is one trend we are seeing a lot of this season, it's a bold burgundy lip.  A little bit vampy, a little bit more sultry, and nice change from the tinted lip balms of summer, all of my picks will compliment the matte skin of Fall and help transition you into the season with ease.

Here are my five must-have lipsticks for the Fall season:

1.  Tarte Glamazon Lipstick in Playful - This lipstick made my top 12 makeup products from 2012 list, and it is still a favorite. 
2. Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint in Moody - A tinted balm/stain, this is the perfect color for Fall and has been a staple in my kit for a while. 
3. NYX Merlot - Highly pigmented, smooth matte color that is also super affordable.
4. Wet n Wild Mauve Outta Here - A budget friendly pick that works on a variety of skin tones. 
5. Hourglass Nude No 6 - Luxury in a tube. 

 Tarte Glamazon Lipstick in Playful: This must-have shade is among the new breed of lippies that we've seen hit the market. Long-wearing, yet not drying due to its infusion of emollient butters this lipstick feels just as amazing on the lips as it looks. Tarte describes the shade as a "purple rose" making it a good choice for those who want to venture into the plum shades while still keeping it wearable. The formula is both creamy and pigmented making Tarte Glamazon lipsticks one of my favorite formulas of all time. I have all the shades, but Playful is my pick for the Fall season.

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint in Moody: These chubby twist up pencils have been a longtime favorite of makeup artists and makeup junkies everywhere. The formula feels like a lip balm, but wears like a stain. If you are afraid of wearing bold lip colors, this is a good choice, because your lips will be bathed in a sheer wash of color rather than full-on pigment. The application is literally effortless, and can be applied without a mirror as you would a lip balm. Moody is a deep berry, which is the lip color this season. Buy this, it will change your life.

NYX Merlot: This matte shade is similar to Tarte Playful (above), but is a bit more budget friendly. It also leans a bit more red than rose.  Merlot is a plummy red long-wear formula that is not overly drying on the lips. I am a huge fan of these lipsticks and if you want to try a trendy shade without breaking the bank, this is a great way to do it. I have countless shades of the NYX Matte Lipsticks, and I can safely say that Merlot is a true favorite of mine.

Wet n Wild Mauve Outta Here: I was super excited when my local CVS recently started selling Wet n Wild. This is a brand I've been using since I was a teenager, and the quality and color selection has only gotten better with time. This shade is part of the brand's "Mega Matte" collection. This deep mauvey shade is surprisingly flattering on most skin tones. The brand keeps costs down with simple packaging, but don't be fooled, the product inside is great quality for the price. If you are looking for a good matte lipstick this season that only costs a couple of bucks, go for this one.

Hourglass Nude No 6: This is the most luxurious of my picks for Fall. The deepest of the Hourglass nude lip stylos, this mauve-nude is the lightest of the shades I've chosen.  While we are seeing a trend toward deeper lip colors this season, we are also seeing a completely nude matte look.  Nothing compliments barely-there makeup like the perfect nude lip. This twist-up crayon provides full coverage with a matte to satin finish. The packaging is super luxurious, complete with gold colored rim and font. If you are looking to splurge on a new lippie this season, I highly recommend this one. Yes, there are a million nude lip colors on the market, but for some reason this is just the perfect nude. If this shade is doesn't work for you, Hourglass has 5 others in the line to choose from. This feels completely weightless on the lips and the jumbo crayon format makes application a breeze.  Try pairing this with a cranberry eyeshadow for a fun, season appropriate look.

If you only purchased one palette this Fall, I hope it was Too Faced Pretty Rebel. I am in love with this palette, and reach for it often. All of the shades are richly pigmented and the texture is an absolute win. This palette includes 10 all new shades to the brand, and comes with everything from wearable neutrals to fun more rebellious shades. Metallic shadows are a huge trend this Fall, and this palette does not fall short. Each eyeshadow has a super cute name, plus the formula is free of parabens. This is a complete palette, meaning you can create a variety of looks without having to reach for any outside shades. I always wear a primer under my shadows, but accidentally forgot to the other day. I created a pretty bold look using this palette, and to my surprise, the shadows stayed put all day, no creasing or fading. This may just be the best palette Too Faced has ever made! The bad news is that it's limited edition, so you better grab it while it's still available. As with any tutorial, if you don't have this exact palette, you can still create the look using similar colors you have in your own collection.

The inspiration for this look was an updated version of the 60's mod eye with a defined, somewhat unblended crease. I didn't add falsies, because I was testing a new mascara, but feel free to add top and bottom lashes if you are so inclined.

Let's get started:

If you normally use an eyeshadow primer, go ahead and prime your eyes. However, these shadows really don't need a primer to make them last all day. I just prepped my lids with foundation, concealer and a little loose powder. I usually like to start with a wash of a neutral color as a base. Since we are using some dark colors, you may want to apply your foundation after you are done with your eyes. It's really a matter of personal preference.


Base: Apply Dainty (matte pinky-beige) from lash line up to your brow using a fluffy brush. You just want a light wash of color at this point.

 Lid: Using a flat shader brush, apply Ringleader (shimmery peachy pink) just to the mobile lid. I used both patting and swiping motions to create the appearance of a nice sheen on the eye. Since these shadows are so pigmented, a little goes a long way. Start with just a touch, you can always add more if you think you need it.

Crease: For the crease, I used a mix of Badass (dark blue-violet metallic)and Totally Fetch (fuchsia). For extra definition, I added just a touch of Miss Sparkles (black with silver shimmer).  Just tap a fluffy dome shaped brush in Totally Fetch, then into Badass and blend slightly above the natural crease of your eye. The two colors combined should create a smokey purple color.  With a smaller crease brush, add Miss Sparkles. You will want to blend slightly with a clean blending brush, but be careful not to over blend. You want the crease to stay defined for this look. I find it helps to keep the eye open, and look straight ahead into a mirror.

Liner: Line top and bottom lash line with black eye pencil I used Milani Liquif'eye in black. Don't worry if it's not perfect, we are gong to smudge it out. You don't want a true wing, but the end should follow the natural curve of your lash line. Then with a synthetic smudge brush, smudge the line to soften it. Line your waterline and tight line if desired.  To set the pencil, I applied Miss Sparkles on top.

Finishing Steps: Curl lashes, add mascara (and/or false lashes), and finish up the rest of your makeup. I went with Tarte Cosmetics LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint in Moody. On cheeks, I used NYX blush in Cinnamon.

Top 5 Fall Eyeshadows (collab)

It is with great pleasure that I am introducing my favorite fall eyeshadows in collaboration with my friends Catherine from Buying Cruelty Free and Christine from Makeup Guinea Pig. As always, all three of our posts include only products that are cruelty-free (not tested on animals).  If you love makeup, you probably love Fall makeup, and more specifically, Fall eyeshadow. This year, the trends we've seen include everything from mattes to metallics, and bold to subdued.  I've tried to include a little bit of everything in this post, but as usual it was super hard to narrow it down to just five, especially this season. 

Some people follow trends, others don't. I personally, love trends and am always willing to try something new, no matter how crazy or off the spectrum it may be. That being said, I believe the five shadows I chose are wearable for just about everyone, regardless of your makeup preferences. 

Here are my five must-have eyeshadows for the Fall season: 

1. Stila Fire (from In The Know Eye Shadow Palette)
2. Arbonne Java eye shadow 
3. Stila Dahlia (available in single & 10 pan eye shadow palette)
4. Sugarpill Poison Plum
5. The Balm Shady Lady All About Alex (available in single & Shady Lady palette)   

Stila Fire: This shade is included in the palette called In The Know. It's an all matte palette, and one of my favorites from the brand. Orange is a huge eyeshadow trend for fall, and this one from Stila is particularly wearable. Although it is a matte shade, it can be applied dry or wet depending on the level of intensity you prefer. While it may look intimidating in the pan, when used in conjunction with a warm brown, it's earthiness really is wearable.  I find this shade in particular makes my blue eyes really stand out since orange and blue are complimentary colors. 

Arbonne Java: While previous seasons have been all about dewiness, this Fall there is a definite focus on matte.  Java is a medium dark brown with a matte finish. I chose this shade because Pantone has declared the color Carafe as one of their Fall 2013 colors.  As I sifted through my collection, this shade seemed the closest to the Pantone shade. Everyone needs a good matte brown in their collection, and this shade is the perfect contour color.

Stila Dahlia: Prune is another popular shade this fall. This deepened matte purple color from Stila is a personal favorite that I have had in my kit for a while. I have it both as a single and as part of a larger palette. This matte purple/blue shade can be applied dry or wet. I'll often use it on a dampened push liner brush to line the eyes because it adds more dimension than black. This color is highly pigmented, and blends like a dream. If you use a fluffier brush, you can also use this as a wash of color allover the eye, which is how we've seen colors like this worn on many of the runways for Fall 2013. 

 As I write this post, Dahlia is currently available on sale as part of the Stila 10 pan eye shadow palette for $35.

Sugarpill Poison Plum: Another one of the Pantone Fall 2013 colors is Acai.  While I do actually have an eyeshadow by this name from Tarte, it was a limited edition from last holiday season, so I decided to include this version from Sugarpill instead. Poison Plum is one of my all time favorite purple eyeshadows. It's a deepened matte purple with a somewhat satin finish. I purchased this color in the Burning Heart quad, but it is also sold separately. The pigment is rich, smooth and you get a lot of product in the pan.  Try it as a contour color, or solo for one hell of a bold smokey eye.

The Balm Shady Lady All About Alex: Although matte skin is a must this fall, we are also seeing a metallic look on the eyes. All About Alex, found in the Shady Lady palette, is a color I love so much, that I actually purchased the single as well. This shade looks good on all skin tones, and is a favorite of mine among my entire eyeshadow collection. It's a golden khaki olive color, that looks different depending on how the light hits it. Aside from how beautiful the color is, the texture is out of this world. The Balm makes some of the best eyeshadow on the market texture wise, and anyone from beginners to experienced artists will appreciate how pigmented and blendable the formula is. This shade holds is own and can be worn solo without help from any outside colors. Seriously, if you don't own this eyeshadow, you should. It is truly perfection in a pan.
